BDPA-DC Students Capture $125,000 in Scholarships & Internships

2008 marked a record year for BDPA-DC student member achievements. Last November, the Washington, D.C. Chapter honored all students during its 30th Anniversary Gala and Annual Awards Reception.

The Chapter's High School Computer Competition (HSCC) Team captured its second consecutive Second-Place Trophy in Atlanta, last year during the National and final HSCC rounds. From the Nation's Capital, each participant took home the Silver Medal along with $2,000 in Bemley Scholarships towards the college of their choice. The Northern Virginia HSCC team (BDPA NoVA) fielded a team for the first time in its nacent history and captured fourth place along with $1000 in Bemley Scholarships for each participant.

A JEF student member of BDPA-DC from Eastern High School won a $100,000 scholarship from the Posse Foundation to attend Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa.

In 2008, two JEF student members from the BDPA's Washington, D.C. Chapter who attend Bowie State University (BSU) also received funded internship opportunities supporting the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of the Navy's High Performance Computing (HPC) initiatives and DoD's Mentor Protege Program.  The D.C. Chapter is recruiting member and non-member volunteers to support emerging efforts to enhance the District's participation in 2009's FIRST Robotics competitions and provide math and PC tutoring for the area's athletic and young adult programs.

Last year's 30th Anniversary Program Guide is attached commemorating our students' achievements in 2008. BDPA-DC intends to continue its support of HBCU/MI's (Bowie State University, Howard University, the  Univesrity of the District of Columbia, and Prince George's Community College) in 2009 and currently is pursuing contracts and grants with industry partners. Interested professionals and students are encouraged to join local BDPA chapters and subscribe to bdpatoday for these and the lastest IT success stories in your industry developing within a community near you.
